What is The City? What is the Outpost?
The City is a dimensional hole in the wall created by The Overlords. It's a place where people from all worlds can be dragged in at the Overlords' whims, and subjected to all manner of horrors. It's a fully functioning city, almost totally automated. Need a place to live? Pick one out. But you might want to make sure it's fortified and the last owners weren't.. eaten. Food, essential medical supplies are all handled courtesy of the city itself. However, defense is completely up to you. You can find basic weapons up to and including shotguns and basic weapons. There are not enough to go Ripley on the monsters at night, so please exercise good judgement. If you up the ante, the City will up the level of monster to keep the playing field just slightly in its favor. The City gives you what you need but it's up to you to stay alive long enough to enjoy it.
The Outpost is what the Overlords consider Stage 2 of their little experiment. The kidnapped heroes (and associated pets!) have grown far too used to their environment. It’s too cushy and there are far too many luxuries.
For now, your way to the City is barred. There is no way to travel between locations and communications is shaky at best. If you arrive in the Outpost you are trapped there. If you remain in the City there is no way to get to the Outpost. Ever.
While the City functioned like a standard location with locals to interact with, food to buy and resources close at hand, the Outpost is far from that. If you need resources beyond what you came with, you’d better start scavenging. Oh, and have we mentioned the monsters?
There are a handful or less of NPCs in the Outpost. For the most part it’s just you, your comrades and the monsters trying to eat you. So good luck with that!
How can my character keep in contact with other people in The Outpost?
There's no discounting the meaningful nature of calling upon people in person, but for those of your characters who would rather communicate long-distance, you're in luck! When your character arrives, on or near their person will be a pocket-sized touch-screen communication device. This device (called a "comm" by the Overlords for brevity's sake) can be used for Video, Text, or Voice communication, in either a public or private capacity. Characters can use their comms to exchange files, or access past public transmissions, as well.
All comm posts are considered open and viewable to anyone. If you wish to keep your interaction private - please put "Locked to So-and-So" in your subject line for clarity's sake.
The connection is spotty at best until network nodes are secured. So we recommend that you stick to personal communication or hope that your online games of charades are up to snuff.
Who are the Overlords, exactly?
They're the ones who created The City and the Outpost, and who maintain it. They alter it, set monsters free in it, drag new people into it, and generally wreak havoc. Their motives are unclear; whether or not they have an ultimate goal to achieve by doing what they do is anyone's guess.
Activity Requirements?
Don't sound so nervous. This isn't a trick, we promise. When we decided to make this place, we wanted it to be a really relaxed environment where people didn't have to feel stressed out about making a certain number of posts to stay in. However, we don't want people to pop in then forget that the place ever exists. Any characters who are inactive for a full month will be considered for removal unless you need to call a hiatus.
Character/canon limits?
Three characters currently per player. If you can demonstrate that you can keep all three consistent and active, we can look at upping the ceiling. This will be TBD for now.
Do you allow duplicates? AU's? OC's?
Yes yes and yes. If you're going to app in a similar version of a character, we do ask that you reach out and get permission from the player in game. For example if you want to app in the 2014 version of Castiel from Supernatural and there's already a standard canon version of Castiel in game? Just shoot them a note and get the OK.
Does my character bring anything with them from their world?
Yes! The clothes on their back, for starters. If your character has powers, their powers come with them as well - with the exception of abilities that bring people back from the dead. Special plot-related circumstances can be allowed on a case-by-case basis, but they must be mod approved.
Resources will be scarce but not impossible to obtain. Every day a handful of resource "hubs" will drop out of the sky at random locations. Inside you will find the basics you need to survive. Ration bars. Water. A weapon or power cell. Or maybe you'll find a box of Odor Eaters and a half-crate of Tang. Again, if you have a question please ping the mod for details. Remember, the Overlords want to keep you jumping, but 100% focus on resource gathering can get tedious.
What happens if my character dies In-Game?
Your character will remain dead for three days while the Overlords poke and prod at their corpse. After that, they'll be revived in a random location with a penalty that you, the player, are allowed to decide! We mods can pick penalties for you, as well, if you're having trouble. Penalties can be anything from forgetting a person important to them, to losing powers, or their ability to speak. The Overlords are experimenters, so let your imagination run wild.
Can I import CR from a previous game?
Yes. This requires prior approval so please reach out to your mods ahead of time.
How does my character get stuff in the game?
You scrounge. Everything that wasn’t in your bag when you arrived you will have to fight for to hang on to. Survival of the fittest and all.
Where can my character live?
In any place that you can hold but we recommend that you look into cooperation to find a secure enough place to get more than an hour or two of sleep at a shot!
But I'm wondering how they eat and breathe? And other science facts?
Seriously gang, it's just a game. Sit back and relax. Unless details in regards to air consumption, food or the basics of existence are important to the plot, don't worry about them. Just assume it's handled in some fashion so you can focus on other more relevant details. Again, if there are questions, reach out to your mods.
The Overlords would like to keep their pets happy so they have added in Resource Hubs to keep everyone moving. They never land in the same place twice and the gear is always varied.
1. Standard size is about that of a small vehicle. They can be made of wood, metal or any combination you care to think of.
2. Rules on what it can contain are simple but must be adhered to :
Size – small to medium things are typically found. Larger things like generators are rare and will require a lot of manual work to get them anywhere. Nothing game changing is permitted. Remember, these are supplies to keep you going not break free.
Use – keep the contents varied. About 75-80% useful and the rest whatever random junk you would like to specify. New Coke, Circus peanuts, balloons, tube socks.
The idea behind the hubs is to keep people moving and extend CR. Make sure the resources are for more than just you.
Still have questions?
You can ask right on this post, in the comments, or you can contact one of the mods!
